Community details

It’s hard to talk about sports history without mentioning Greece. From the ancient Olympic Games, commonly dated to 776 BC, to the origins of the marathon in 490 BC, the nation has made a long-lasting impact on global sports and society. But it’s one of the Olympics' newest sports that’s bringing people from all backgrounds together - skateboarding. Free Movement Skateboarding works with a diverse group of young people in Athens who face social and economic exclusion, many of whom are members of marginalized communities, refugees, or experiencing poverty.

About the organization

Free Movement Skateboarding empowers young people in Athens by using skateboarding to transcend social barriers, fight discrimination, and build community. Through inclusive sessions in public spaces, a mobile skatepark, and a regular schedule, we create safe environments where youth of all backgrounds can develop confidence, friendships, and social skills. By addressing prejudices and fostering empathy, we promote well-being, empowerment, and social cohesion, pushing for a welcoming and diverse Athenian skate scene and society—both on and off the board.

United by Sport

Free Movement Skateboarding is rewriting the narrative. Through a fresh approach, it builds bridges across cultural divides in Athens to tackle racism and xenophobia, enabling young people to see diversity as a source of strength and mutual learning. By doing so, it is laying the foundation for deeper societal change where everyone can feel safe, supported, and seen.
