Community details

Since war broke out in 2014, people in Yemen have faced significant humanitarian challenges. As of 2024, more than 4.5 million Yemenis are internally displaced according to the UN Refugee Agency. Over 80% of the population lives below the poverty line, and more than half experience severe food insecurity. The collapse of health and educational facilities has left millions without adequate medical care or access to schooling.  In Lahj and Ad Dhale’e, Helpcode supports some of the most underserved communities, including internally displaced people and the Muhamasheen—an ethnic minority long subjected to discrimination and exclusion.

About the project

Helpcode uses sports as a tool to foster inclusion and expand access to opportunities. The project trains local coaches in anti-discrimination techniques, makes sports more accessible, and organizes workshops, campaigns, and events to raise awareness about discrimination and to promote tolerance. By partnering with local authorities and sports organizations, the initiative advocates for systemic change by supporting participants to recognize, address, and prevent discrimination. Sports-based psychosocial support helps participants build resilience and prioritize their well-being, supporting them to work through challenges and drive positive change in their communities.
