Community details

Situated in Jordan’s remote desert, Azraq refugee camp opened in 2014 for Syrians fleeing civil war and as a response to overcrowding at the nearby Zaatari refugee camp. Over 60% of the population are under 18, and 4.5% are disabled, according to UNHCR. Azraq, the Jordanian town 20 kilometers west of the camp, also hosts many Syrians who fled. Refugees in the area must navigate increasing economic challenges and dwindling humanitarian aid, contributing to high levels of poverty.

About the project

KLABU’s focus is on unlocking the access to sport for people and communities in refugee camps. The organization builds on experience and insights gained in refugee camps. The clubhouse that KLABU is building inside the refugee camp provides a sports library to borrow sports equipment and clothing and a space for the community to come together and find joy in sport and beyond. The refugee community also uses the space to watch broadcast TV matches, host workshops and access WiFi and other resources. So, it becomes a space to convene, build community and reduce barriers to accessing sport. In addition to the clubhouse in the refugee camp, KLABU has opened a gym inside Azraq town to also provide a space where Syrians and Jordanians can connect and interact while enjoying sports, enabling more peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding. KLABU is collaborating with UNHCR and their implementing partner is AFDP Global who has experience delivering sport-based programs for refugees.
