Community details

Reclaim Childhood works with local and refugee girls living in Jordan who have limited access to sport, and are often excluded from public spaces, the workforce, and leadership positions. Jordan hosts the second-highest number of refugees per capita in the world. Many schools and neighborhoods in the country are segregated by nationality, meaning there are few spaces for refugees and the host community to interact. The NGO Reclaim Childhood intentionally brings together diverse communities to create spaces where everyone can thrive.

About the organization

Reclaim Childhood creates safe and inclusive spaces for refugee and local girls in Jordan to thrive by playing sports, working with coaches, and building community. The organization has three main goals. The first is creating safe spaces where participants can “Reclaim Childhood” and just be kids. The second is to connect refugees and host communities in Jordan that may otherwise not interact. The third is to inspire and empower young girls and women by ensuring participants have female role models and learn life lessons and skills through sport. To achieve its goals, all coaches are women who come from the same neighborhoods as participants and deeply understand the challenges girls face in these communities. Coaches communicate with hesitant families and serve as role models and mentors for girls. Sessions include sport, team building, and socio-emotional and life skills training. Within this structure, coaches emphasize social cohesion by creating diverse teams and facilitating conversations around racism and discrimination to address challenges participants face in society.

United by Sport

By creating safe and inclusive places for girls from diverse backgrounds to play, Reclaim Childhood tackles gender-based discrimination, racism, and xenophobia. It helps pave a new way forward in Jordan, creating spaces for newcomers and host communities to learn and grow with each other. Through sport, Reclaim Childhood shows the next generation that when you bring people together, barriers can be broken, and strong bonds can be built.
